Student Financial Support

Texas A&M University at Galveston supports its graduate students with a wide array of financial resources. Most of our current students take advantage of multiple funding sources to help cover their school expenses. Students may receive support from a combination of assistantships, fellowships, scholarships, and financial aid.

Graduate Assistantships

Four different types of graduate assistantships are available for TAMUG graduate students: research, teaching, non-teaching, and lecturer assistantships. These paid positions

  • Provide a starting salary of $2250 monthly
  • Engage in research, teaching, and other department-related activities at the Galveston Campus
  • Require service of 20 hours per week and full-time enrollment status*
  • Provide optional insurance benefits
  • Qualify students for in-state tuition rates. Doctoral students serving in graduate assistantships may also have their tuition charges paid on their behalf.

Assistantships are made available by the academic department. Any inquiries should be directed toward the department of interest.

* Full-time enrollment status is defined as enrolled in 9 semester credit hours (SCH) per fall or spring semester and 6 SCH in summer. Lecturer assistantships are not required to be enrolled full-time.

Graduate Student Awards

Graduate Student Awards can help master’s thesis and doctoral students fund the cost of their education. Many types of fellowships are available for TAMUG and TAMU students at the Galveston Campus.

TAMUG Graduate Student Awards

TAMUG graduate committee faculty mentors may nominate master’s thesis option and doctoral graduate students for competitive graduate student awards. Two awards are available: 1 year and 2 year. Students granted a Graduate Student Award will receive

  • A paid graduate research assistantship for the duration of the award
  • Medical insurance benefits
  • Tuition and fees paid for 24 semester credit hours (SCH) per year
Graduate and Professional School Fellowships (College Station students)

Graduate students of programs at the College Station campus may be nominated for graduate fellowships by their faculty mentors. These opportunities include the Aviles and Johnson Fellowship Program and the Pathways to the Doctorate Grants and Fellowships.

External Fellowships

A variety of external fellowships can also support graduate students. These are awarded by organizations outside the university, and each has their own application requirements, process, and deadlines.

Scholarships

Many scholarships and grants are available for TAMUG graduate students. These opportunities can help cover school, travel, and other related expenses. All competitive, TAMUG-awarded scholarships of $1,000 or greater per academic year may also allow students to pay tuition at the in-state rate.
