Passing of Captain Sean McNeice
November 9, 2022
With a heavy heart, we share the unexpected news that Captain Sean McNeice, Master of the Training Ship for the Texas A&M Maritime Academy and former associate professor of practice for the Department of Maritime Transportation, passed away on November 8, 2022.
Capt. McNeice took intense pride in the successes of Texas A&M Maritime Academy cadets, who he often affectionately referred to as his ‘khaki kids.’ He firmly believed that professionalism and discipline were essential to success and strived to develop those characteristics in students during his tenure at Texas A&M-Galveston. In addition, he thought that teamwork was the key to success and challenged many of us to work together despite our differences.
He was a champion for our past, present and future. He had the heart of a poet, lending to his favorite Shakespeare quote, “For some must watch, while others sleep,” and a salty mariner growl that sent many a cadet scurrying to follow his instructions.
Capt. McNeice began his maritime service in the U.S. Army as a Watercraft Operator, then later transferred to the Navy Reserves. He graduated from the California Maritime Academy in 1989 with Maritime Transportation and Naval Science degrees.
Though he did not graduate as an Aggie, he certainly embodied those Aggie Core Values we hold so dear: selflessness, respect, loyalty, integrity, leadership and excellence. We will provide details for a sunset salute ceremony on the Galveston Campus in the coming weeks.
We know that many of you are deeply impacted by this loss, and we encourage faculty, staff or students grieving to reach out to staff in the Office of Counseling, Suite 104 of the Seibel Center. They can be reached at 409-740-4736.
For now, rest easy, Captain; we have the watch.
