Get To Know Seleni Cruz

What in your life drew you to your current field of study?

I have always been drawn to the ocean. Growing up in Belize, the coast was where I played, learned, and felt most at home, but I also saw how fragile it was. Those early experiences inspired me to study environmental and resource economics, because while we cannot manage the ocean itself, we can shape how people interact with it.

What do you hope your students gain from studying or working with you?

I want my students to ask interesting questions that push them to think about how they interact with the world and recognize that their decisions, big or small, can have a meaningful impact.

What are you passionate about in your personal life?

I like to think of myself as an adventurer at heart. I enjoy anything that gets me outdoors, from backpacking and kayaking to, more recently, white-water rafting. I’ve also taken up amateur photography, capturing the places and moments that inspire me.
