What in your life drew you to your current field of study?
When in 2010 I witnessed a widespread flood disaster in Venetia, the region where I grew up in Northeast Italy, I realized I wanted to work on sustainable, low-maintenance and long-term solution for flood mitigation. From there, I eventually embraced hazard geography and GIScience as my fields of expertise.
What do you hope your students gain from studying or working with you?
I hope they see the value of GIS, get good working methods, and realize how many possibilities open up once one has GIS skills. More than anything, I want them to find a job and pursue their career goals. If I can contribute to that, all the better!
What are you passionate about in your personal life?
Outside of work, I enjoy an occasional trip to the mountains to go hiking. Additionally I have been educating myself on sustainable architecture and interior design. I have a long-term objective of designing an energetically self-sufficient house where I can retire one day.
