Program Options
Students must be enrolled in one of the following majors:
- BS in Marine Biology certification in Life Science
- BS in Marine Sciences certification in Chemistry or Physical Sciences
- BS in Coastal Environmental Science and Society certification in Life Science or Physical Sciences; can be modified for Chemistry
- BS in University Studies: Oceans and One Health certification in Life Science or Chemistry depending on minors
Students must meet with an advisor and ensure that the courses for the teaching area are embedded and met as part of the student’s degree plan.
Composite science is not currently available but may be in the future. Students should select chemistry, physical sciences, or life science. Options to pursue composite science are available post-certification.
Program Eligibility
Students must meet these minimum requirements to be considered for the program:
- Grades in 1st year courses for the area of certification must average to B or better. First year courses for each area of certification are as follows: life science – BIOL 111 and BIOL 112, chemistry – CHEM 119 (101/111) and CHEM 120 (102/112)
- GPR of 2.75 or higher is highly recommended.
- GPR of 2.5 in content area.
- 30-80 completed college credit hours.
- Must have at least three semesters remaining as an undergraduate student.
Program Components
The significant components of the program include:
• A baccalaureate degree in a science based field
• All SEED minor requirements
• One semester of clinical teaching
• Two TExES certification tests: 1. content specific test 2. Pedagogy and Personal Responsibilities (PPR) test
SEED Minor Requirements
Student must meet all course requirements for a total of 18 sch. Students must make a grade of “C” or better in all courses. A 2.5 GPA is required in minor courses to pursue teacher certification. Substitutions must be approved by the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture advisors. The sequence below is an ideal pattern but can be adjusted based on the individual student. All TEFB and MEFB courses require a field based experience in a local school setting.
Currently, TAMUG students will be placed at Galveston Independent School District (any middle or high school) or Odyssey Academy (middle or high school).

INST 222 Foundations of Education in a Multicultural Society (3 SCH)
Senior Year: Spring
The Applied Learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Minor consists of the 18 semester credit hours (SCH) noted above. Upon completion the student will then proceed into clinical teaching.
